Sophie Canelake resides at Episcopal Homes of Minnesota on the third floor of The Gardens, which is a Green House home.  A Green House home is an intentional community for 10 elders, that provides skilled nursing care. She adores her room, because the quaint corner location provides a wonderful view of the outdoors, and easy access to the rest of her home.  At 91 years old, Sophie truly appreciates her new home, and the life she lives here!

Sophie is originally from Wisconsin, and spent most of her life in northern Minnesota.  Sophie’s daughter resides in Minneapolis and this move enables her to visit  frequently during each week. “The convenience of living in close proximity to my family is extremely important,” explained Sophie.  Sophie and her family felt it was in her best interest to be in a community with the greatest level of care. A family friend of Sophie, who is an expert in senior care housing, highly recommended The Gardens – Nursing Home for the undeniably welcoming staff and respectable reputation Episcopal Homes has been providing for over 100 years.

She has her own independent bathroom and bedroom to decorate. “I love rearranging furniture and adding decorative touches as I see fit,” said Sophie. She has two large windows in her suite that bring in a plethora of sunshine every day.  Her room is cozy, but there is also enough space  to host family and friends.   The important thing is that at The Garden’s, Sophie has a sense of belonging, and ownership of the space.  This is her home.

sophie“The transition into The Gardens was very smooth and staff has been supportive” said Sophie.  Sophie expressed her transition was stress free because of the welcoming staff. She didn’t know what to expect when moving into her new home, but her favorite part of moving in was the comfort and homey feel The Gardens provides.

At Episcopal Homes of Minnesota, The  Gardens community is a part of the national  Green House Project. The Green House model  is created to foster a feeling of home and comfort for elders. The trailblazing model supports meaningful lives for elders, empowered staff and a real home. With a goal to eliminate loneliness, helplessness and boredom from  the lives of elders,  The Gardens will create lives worth living through relationship based care.

Despite the Weather…Ground is Broken for the First Skilled Nursing Green House homes in Minnesota

We all know how crazy the weather has been this past winter…but who would have thought snowflakes would fall on a May 1st groundbreaking ceremony? Well, that’s exactly what greeted the guests for the Episcopal Homes of Minnesota ceremony to launch the construction of six Green House homes on their campus.

The $45 million project will provide a variety of living options for Elders including the skilled nursing services in the Green House homes which will be called “Episcopal Church Home – The Gardens”.  Episcopal Homes has been providing house and care for Elder for more than 100 years in St. Paul, Minnesota. The homes are slated to be open in late 2014.

We all know how important nature is to all of us, especially our Elders in Green House homes…so our friends at Episcopal Homes plan to do something special with the ground flung into that wheelbarrow. It will be saved and used in the future greenspace and two-story indoor garden. Such a wonderful and thoughtful idea!

Green House Assisted Living Homes for Minnesota!

The “Land of 10,000 Lakes” will soon be the home of the first Green House Assisted Living homes!  Groundbreaking ceremonies took place on a gorgeous sunny morning June 27th in Mankato, Minnesota.

The homes will be called Water’s Edge at Willow Brook, and will be developed and operated by Grace Senior Services.  Brad and Heather Bass are the owners and have a deep commitment to serving elders.  They began their journey by opening an adult day service out of their home in 1997 and now have several senior housing cooperatives, two Assisted Living facilities, an adult foster care program, and a team of dedicated staffers to work with all of the elders.

During the groundbreaking event, Brad expressed his enthusiasm for the project, “We are excited to be part of the national replication project for Green House homes and for the opportunity to bring this special model to Mankato and the state of Minnesota.”  The three homes should be open early next year.  A warm welcome to our newest members of the Green House family!
